A TALE RETOLD

How Tortoise got his cracks

Long ago, when animals could speak, the birds received an invitation to a feast in the sky. Tortoise longed to join them, so each bird lent him a feather until he had wings of his own.

On the journey, clever Tortoise chose a new name: “All of You.” When the hosts said the feast was for “all of you,” he claimed every dish! The hungry birds took back their feathers and flew home.

Tortoise asked Pigeon to tell his family to place soft things beneath him. But the message became mixed up, and hard objects were laid instead. Tortoise jumped, and his shell cracked into many pieces. His family carefully joined it together—and that is why, people say, his shell still carries a beautiful pattern today.

Think about it: What could Tortoise have done differently?
